Steps to replacing a social security card

Losing your social security card can be an extremely annoying set back that could happen to anybody. You knew it was an important document, you knew you had to take care of it, but taking it out of the house really was unavoidable, and now you’ve lost it. Thankfully though a small annoyance is all it is, as it is very easy to apply for a new card at any time.

You will need to apply for a new card quickly if you are going to be opening a bank account or starting a new job, especially fast if you are claiming a part of the $94 billion of social benefits the New York SSA hands out annually. However applying for a new card is completely free. It just takes a little time as you are required to go into your local social security office. Step 1:

The first thing you’ll need to do after you lose your social security card is complete an SS-5 application form. These can be downloaded online for free and require only your most basic information. You will need to print the application form and fill it using blue or black ink, just like a school exam. Once you have put your name, date of birth, old social security number into the form you are ready.

Step 2:

The next thing you will need to do is collect all of the required documents to prove your identity and work status together. If you were born in the US and you only need to replace your card just one piece of photo ID will do. If you have immigrated to the US or are applying for your first social security card, you will need to provide two.

Remember that these proofs of identity will have to be the original copies or an authorised copy from the issuer of the original ID. Photocopies won’t be accepted, even if they have been authenticated by a notary.

Step 3:

Once you have the completed SS-5 and all required documents together you will need to visit your local Social Security Card Office. Depending on which borough of the city you are registered as living in you will need to visit a different office. Step 4:

After you have submitted your application to the correct office, all you need to do is wait. It will typically take between 10 and 14 days to receive a new card in New York City. Once you have your hands on your new card you are free to open bank accounts, apply for jobs or claim social benefits just the same as always.
